Microsoft Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2010 is the collaboration platform at the core of Microsofts application lifecycle management solution that helps enable teams to reduce risk, streamline interactions and eliminate waste throughout the software delivery process.

Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) uses Team Foundation Server (TFS) as a data storage and server infrastructure to collaborate on projects. TFS provides a repository of control code, control of work items and service reporting. TFS is based on the concept of "work item", which is a separate unit of work that requires execution. By themselves, the elements may be several different types, such as error, problem, demand quality, script, etc. The selected framework of TFS for a specific project defines what types of work items will be available and what they will have attributes.

TFS source control system stores all the code, as well as a record of all changes and current harvesting code (check-outs) in the database SQL Server.
